Helen Anderson

My work is an exploration is a dialogue between the frozen moment of a photograph and the living texture of fiber.

The foundation of each piece begins behind the lens. I use my original photography as a canvas, printing these images onto fabric to serve as a structural inspiration. Using embroidery, I translate the flat surface of the print into a three-dimensional image.

I allow the weight, twist, and sheen of the yarn to dictate the evolution of the piece. The thread is not merely an embellishment; it is the primary architect of depth and color. By layering various stitches and fibers, I create a sensory experience that invites the viewer to look closer at the interplay between the digital image and the organic nature of the textile.

My practice is deeply rooted in a diverse creative background. My time studying at textile school in Sweden provided me with a rigorous technical foundation, while art school in Sweden allowed me to experiment with a vast array of materials and philosophies.

Beyond the studio, my work as a florist informs my understanding of composition, color theory, and the ephemeral beauty of the natural world. This daily engagement with botanical forms flows directly into my textile art, resulting in pieces that celebrate texture, growth, and the transformative power of creative expression.
