Jean Crane

I am drawn to watercolor because of the wonderful transparency of the media and the sense of light it captures. Each Painting is a continuous act of balancing and re-balancing color and value; each change in light and shadow shifts the sense of balance in the entire work. My aim is to create paintings where both active and passive areas interact, and where each part generates its own sense of energy while contributing, at the same time, to a unified composition.

For some time, flowers have been a dominate focus in my work, often in a wild and informal setting, and just at the edge of disintegration. New flowers are very similar to one another, but

They age in very individual ways; it is the aging process that intrigues and inspires me. The dark backgrounds are an important emotional element for me, symbolizing the source of life and energy they have emerged from, and to which they are returning.
