Poppies are a symbol of Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. Poppies are also sacred to Demeter the goddess of the harvest who presided over grains, fertility of the earth, and the seasons. She is the mother of Persephone who is associated with spring, and with the seeds of the fruits and the fields. Demeter was said to concoct an infusion of poppies (like a tea) in order to sleep through her sorrow while her daughter Persephone was absent. The title, Remembering Bliss was chosen because Persephone joined her husband Hades in the underworld during the winter and returned in the spring. A palette of cobalt blue, cobalt violet, emerald green and red lake were used to create the joyous feeling of spring. Being a certified yoga and Reiki (hands on healing) practitioner contribute significantly to the tranquility felt in my oil paintings. Having commissioned oil paintings similar to Remembering Bliss in several hospitals in order to uplift the energy is a great honor and fit. There is a very real sense in which great richly textured original oil paintings can calm and center you, offering those moments of peace that you so desperately need at the end of a long hectic day.
