I had never heard of Gar Wood, the first person to go over 100 miles an hour on water in 1931. Obviously, here was another area in the world of ships and boats I had completely missed. But when told by the person who introduced me to him, that he had built a speedboat powered by four Packard “aeroplane engines” and called it Miss America, naturally, I was interested. And when I saw black and white photographs of the sleek, sturdy hull built from Oregon Spruce, and dominated by 24 exhaust pipes, leaving only a small space at the back of the boat for the “pilot” and co-pilot,” I had a feeling I would take a pass at this unusual craft—an area where I had never ventured.
